Free photo editing advice

Anybody got any ideas what is the best free photo editing software? There are so many available on line, but hoped somebody could advise.

I just use the one that comes with Microsoft Office. That does everything I want and is (apart from a few irritations) self-evident in use. If you don't have Office I can't help.

I have Office 13  Colwyn, but never thought about that Duh!!

Picasso is very good I use it with chrome.

I use Photoscape for tweaking and cropping etc.

Gimp.org simple to use, much like photo shop yet easier. Rosemary look at my photos on Feb and see the photo I did of my nieces sat in the palms of my brothers hands, that was after only one day of learning.
