Big Day yesterday, two implants fitted and to be honest, for someone who doesn't get nervous, I was a bit nervous. Cagatay had arranged for an implant specialist to assist him with the procedure, being a typical Brit. I turned up for my appointment 20 minutes early and there was his assistant in the waiting room, who I believe had travelled from Antalya. Before they invited me into the chair, they closed the surgery door and spent 15 minutes in perpetration and sterilisation of the room and equipment. I have to say that I have never seen such high standards of cleanliness, even the handles on the light and regularly used dental equipment were covered in specially made sterile surgical sleeves to minimise any chance of infection. I was invited in, took a deep breath and thought, here we go !
The procedure lasted the best part of two hours, the care and attention to detail shown was amazing, apparently one of the things that needs to be avoided is the implant protruding into a sinus area, they took several X-rays during the treatment to check that their calculations were absolutely precise and a number of oral photographs were taken during the procedure which form part of the record and used by Cagatay to take me through the treatment at the end.
So the big question, Did it hurt?
I will be 100% honest and tell you that I never felt a thing, even the injections to deaden the area were preceded by a local spray anaesthetic and were painless. There is a lot of tugging, pulling and scraping noise, but honestly, not once did I flinch with pain. I used Ice packs and took the prescribed painkillers last night and awoke this morning, again pain free, there is some slight swelling and tenderness but not the pain I expected.
Don't get me wrong, implant surgery isn't my favourite thing ever and I'm not yet 24 hours into a course of treatment that will go on for several months, but my review is honest and I hope it helps others who might benefit from this sort of treatment but are a worried about the prospect.
Next stage, stitches out, I'll let you know.
