It depends on your stairs, how a safety gate will fit. We have stair that go around in a half circle and no way would a safety gate fit. We got a carpenter to make fitted gates for the top and bottom of the stairs and they are lovely, so well made they are like stair furniture and blend in beautifully.
There is a big shop on the opposite side to the fish market entrance that sells lots of baby equipment, you may get a stair gate in there.
